When it comes to spring cleaning, don’t limit yourself to just inside your home. Your yard can benefit from a good cleanup, too. This includes removing dead or dying trees from your property. Ensure the health and aesthetics of your lawn this year by getting rid of those trees that are showing signs of decline.
Structural Issues
Inspect the health of your trees. There are several things you can look for that let you know a tree needs to be removed. For example, if you see excessive dead or dying branches, there may be some pretty serious underlying issues. This is especially true if the damage is only on one side of the tree.
Wounds, splits, or deep cracks in the trunk of your tree can structurally compromise it. Furthermore, large holes or cavities can weaken the tree’s structure. In both of these situations, the tree is at risk of falling and needs to be removed.
Even something as simple as exposed roots can indicate a problem. You shouldn’t be able to see the roots, but heavy wind, soil erosion, or root decay can cause this. Furthermore, large sections of peeling or missing bark indicate the tree is declining. Address these issues promptly, as the tree is no longer secure.
Disease and Pests
During your spring cleaning process, take the time to look for signs of disease or pest infestations in your trees. Fungal growth on the trunk is a sign of internal decay. If you see things like sawdust around the base of the tree or notice boreholes in the trunk, you may have an insect infestation. These are issues that won’t go away. Instead, they’ll spread to other trees and plants in your yard. Removal may be the best option.
Safety Issues
Inspect your trees after spring storms as well. High winds can cause heavy damage. Large branches can crack, or the trunk may split. In these situations, the tree can become unstable.
If a tree falls on its own, someone could get hurt. There’s a good chance it will damage property, too. Remove any trees that are damaged or located too close to utilities and structures such as buildings, roads, or power lines.
